Pioneer doesn't do things by halves. Whatever type of product it makes, whether it's TVs, DVD decks or Blu-ray players, it's sure to be packed with all the latest technology, offer astonishing build quality and more often than not deliver exceptional performance. Of course, you end up paying a higher price for the privilege but that's Pioneer's modus operandi these days - if you want the best, it's gonna cost you.

Graphics Cards up for Non-gaming Tasks

CyberLink has taken a good hard look at GPU transcoding capabilities last summer, and they have also been hard at work, adding transcoding to its own software stack. Fast forward one year and you will find the CyberLink PowerDirector 7 Ultra to be one muscular piece of software, shipping with GPU-accelerated video transcoding. In a tech demonstration (I am normally very reserved with the claims of such demonstrations since the results tend to be skewed).

Video: Pioneer's AVIC-F Series of in-car navigators to take on Sync
Posted on May 29 2008 5:22 AM by adeal

Look out Microsoft, Pioneer's Linc series of in-dash and "on-dash" systems have their sights set on your voice controlled Sync. The first thing you'll notice is Pioneer's pixy-dusted UI which easily trumps the Sync's rather staid presentation. The videos show off Pioneer's real-time data feeds and natural speech recognition with the help of some smarmy actor-slash-models who'll probably be serving you lunch today if you live in LA. But we digress.

This quirky little invention does just one thing - simulate the effect of having left your TV turned on. The compact box uses only a fraction of the electricity of a real TV, and doesn’t put unnecessary wear and tear on your precious plasma or flat panel.

DISH Network's forthcoming DVRs get detailed: hints of Sling all over
Posted on May 19 2008 2:19 AM by adeal

Although DISH Network's previous quarter wasn't anything to write home about, it sounds like the satcaster (EchoStar, technically) isn't going to allow its set-top line to grow stale in the process. During the recent Team Summit in Nashville, Tennessee, DISH's CEO Charlie Ergen reiterated that it would be beaming out "more than 100 national HD channels" by the end of 2008, and he also made mention that the EchoStar 11 satellite would lift off in July. Most interesting, however, was all the talk about the new STBs.

Samsung DVD-1080P8 DVD Player
Posted on May 15 2008 3:10 AM by adeal

Recent research in the US showed that the biggest challenge faced by Blu-ray manufacturers is not hi-def digital downloads or high hardware prices but the fact that people are perfectly happy with the picture quality from their upscaling DVD players. And judging by some of the upscaling decks we've tested recently, we can understand why - they might not be hi-def, but the pictures are sharp enough to make anyone think twice about paying £300 upwards for a hi-def deck.
