Here's Sanyo's latest Gorilla NVA-GS1609FT (16GB SSD) and NVA-GS1409DT (8GB SSD), in-dash car navigation systems. Both feature a 7” QVGA touchscreen, Sanyo Eco Drive (the slower you will drive, happier the GPS will be), an improved GUI and 3D maps… And that’s pretty much it.

The last time I took my family on vacation without a GPS, I was irritated before we got out of town. I tried to let my wife read the map, which was a bad idea. Perhaps schools should teach basic map reading to girls when they take them out of class that one day during health to learn about girly parts and pregnancy. The easy remedy to this is to use GPS, which can be a marriage saver.

Several years ago the Gorilla GPS line-up from Sanyo was everything but exciting, but recently Sanyo worked AMAZINGLY hard to change its old fashioned design by releasing a new and cool looking portable GPS full of nice features. Like the three latest Gorilla SSD portable GPS announced this morning in Tokyo, the NV-SD730DT (7”), NV-SB450DT and NV-SB530DT (5.2”) with LED backlight, 8GB SSD, VICS traffic information (not included on the NV-SB530DT), 1 Seg TV tuner, Eco Mode (to let you know when you're driving too fast).

Though traffic has always been billed as a premium, subscription-based feature on navigation systems, the latter half of 2008 went a long way in demolishing that reputation. Garmin and Navigon both announced affordable GPS systems with free lifetime traffic, and even the budget outfit Mio got in the game by offering a solid year of free traffic with its units. At $299, Garmin’s Nuvi 265WT is among the cheapest in its line of free-traffic-equipped navigation systems, below the entire 7-series, which has more features, yet above the ordinary Nuvi 265T

When you think “handheld or portable game system,” you probably get a mental image of some sleek technology with pleasing lines and a good balance. But in the DIY portable community, things aren’t so simple. Here, we’re talking about cobbling together bits of consoles that aren’t supposed to be portable and trying to make them fit into a pocket… or a bag… or at least the car, without the need to haul a television around. You know.

If you're a golfer and are actively looking for a method to lower your handicap, why not give the Sureshot GPS a...well, shot? It knows more than 12,000 courses in and out, giving you an edge no matter where you go golfing. Boasting GPS capability, it will then calculate the distance from tee to green while laying out all the possible hazards for you to see so that you can make the best choice the next time you step up.

Portable GPS devices are among the hottest selling CE gadgets: An amazing 12 million are expected to be gobbled up this year, according to the Consumer Electronics Association. Not too bad for a device that simply tells you where to go—and gets annoyed if you decide to take a different route! (We affectionately call our Garmin GPS “Naggie” since she gets a dismissive tone if we choose to blaze our own shortcuts.).

The V7 Nav740 is a GPS unit aimed at people who are interested in a GPS for their car but have shied away from them due to their generally high prices. At just $219 USD it’s certainly very affordable, and surprisingly it’s not a “cheapo” GPS unit at all. The Nav740 is very easy to use, has great features and only minor flaws.

The Taiwanese company Haicom has released their HI-408BT 32 Channel Bluetooth GPS for PDA and PC. Now what's so special about this GPS? This device is pretty compact, 75x30x17mm at only 48g.... If you're interested, this GPS is widely available in Europe and the USA.
