Good news, FPS addicts… There’s no need to worry if funds are tight, as custom computer builder Maingear has developed the Dash PC as a low-cost alternative to its boutique gaming rigs, albeit with the same attention to detail and unique design that are the hallmarks of a personalized machine. The thinking being, of course, that if you are a gamer and like Maingear, but can’t afford one of the provider’s higher-end systems, when your friends and family need a recommendation, you’ll tell them to pick this puppy up.

For the vast majority of computer users out there a quad-core processor and 4 GB of RAM are simply not needed. For many users the most a computer is used for is surfing the net, checking email and chatting with friends. Any computer can do that and what this sort of computer users need is a cheap computer.
Cheap computers don’t get much cheaper than what you see with eMachines latest offerings. Two new models are now available for those looking for low cost desktops that come without a display. The T3646 retails for only $299.99 and features 1GB of RAM and an AMD Sempron LE-1250 processor. Storage for the machine is to a 160GB HDD and the system runs Windows Vista Home Basic.

Gateway has recently revamped its FX line of gaming desktops - internally at least. Though it looks the same as other older FX machines we’ve seen from Gateway, this one is easily the most powerful Gateway ever assembled, and even includes a factory-overclocked quad-core processor running at a steamy 3.66GHz. Though its performance is generally excellent, we think Gateway has pushed this machine’s CPU a bit too much, as the BTX induction fan is way too loud and we were able to make it blue screen on cue. It’s also puzzling to us why Gateway builds “gaming” rigs and then loads the exact same OS image it uses on every single Gateway PC, treating it like any run-of-the-mill machine.

Integrated graphics sets that handle DirectX 10 like it's their job are a dime a dozen, but ASUS has nevertheless managed to find bragging rights in its G35 series of mobos. Hailed as the "world's first Intel platform" with onboard graphics capable of supporting DirectX 10 natively, the aforesaid motherboards won't require a separate GPU in order to handle the simplest of DX10 demands. Of course, we wouldn't expect the GMA X3500 to run circles around Crysis frame rate tests, but we suppose they'll do for the casual fans in attendance. Per usual, ASUS has left us high and dry in regard to pricing, but the trio of boards should be available as we speak.

Shuttle is coming out with an AMD-based home theater PC (HTPC) that features a Blu-Ray & HD-DVD combo drive and a DVB-T TV Tuner. The memory is sparse: only 1GB, we recommend pumping it to 2GB, as sit as really cheap. I have good memories of my first Media Center PC – a Shuttle, but I think that it is time for the company to improve the form factor, especially the air-cooling system.
